Exhibition Launch

Saturday, 3 September 2022, 3-5pm | Public event | Free
APA Gallery, Collingwood Yards, Melbourne

Art et al.'s exhibition Intersect will present work from three continents by neurodivergent, intellectually and learning disabled artists, alongside their non-disabled peers. A focus of the exhibition will be work produced during Peer/Peer collaborations – digital residencies pairing international artists with and without disabilities.

Intersect

Art et al.’s third exhibition Intersect opened Saturday 3 September to a wonderful and warm crowd. A highlight was the presentation of a collaborative artwork created by John Powell-Jones (UK) and Matt Robertson (AU) from ArtGusto. Matt (pictured centre) travelled up to Melbourne from Geelong with ArtGusto Director Sharon Bromley (pictured left) to participate in our panel discussion and attend the opening. There are plans for a workshop in the gallery with artists from ArtGusto and Arts Project Australia. We’ll keep you posted on how that goes!

About the Exhibition.

INTERSECT | Art et al. X APA
Collingwood Yards, Melbourne

Art et al. is proud to announce its second Australian exhibition, Intersect at Arts Project Australia, Melbourne. The exhibition will feature new international commissions, collaborations, and artists engaged with over the last 18 months. Intersect will also present a selection of curated video works introducing our 2022 programming ‘UK x Australia x Indonesia’, a year-long collaboration with Indonesian organisation Ketemu.

Art et al.'s exhibition, Intersect, will present work from three continents by neurodivergent, intellectually and learning disabled artists, alongside their non-disabled peers. An exhibition focus will be the artworks produced during our final 'UK/AU Season of Culture' Peer/Peer collaborations – digital residencies pairing international artists with and without disabilities. Another focus will be revisiting artists featured in commissioned writing by Jennifer Higgie, Ella Fleck and Katrina Schwarz.

“I can best describe this process [Curating Collections] as a lively ‘call and response’. Billy’s selection of works is idiosyncratic, moving across genre, media and time. It connects beautifully to his written piece that reflects on the act of travelling itself, as well as the Australian landscape and life in our cities — from the perspectives of both Indigenous and settler artists. Creating new narrative links between works, we hope his thoughtful selection will inspire more journeys through our Collection.”

– Charlotte Day / Director Monash University Museum of Art | MUMA

“The [Curating Collections] project was a joy right from the start. The Monash University Collection is so vast and rich, that I felt like a child in a sweet shop. And once I found a way to describe how it spoke to me (i.e., travelling), I became determined to suck as much excitement out of it as possible.”

- Billy Mann, artist, Submit to Love Studios and Art et al. Steering Committee Member

Celebrating the diversity of cultures, exhibiting artists will include Holly Stevenson, Georgia Szmerling, Matt Robertson, Lala Nurlala, Matthew Clarke, Samraing Chea, David Blandy, Larry Achiampong and John Powell-Jones. Select exhibiting artists' work with the following supported studios: Arts Project Australia, Melbourne; ArtGusto, Geelong; and Submit to Love, London.

“I found it engaging and it brought together two continents. It came at the right time for me. It gave me my mojo back and helped me to be creative.”

- Australian artist Matt Robertson, ArtGusto on his Peer/Peer Collaboration with UK-based artist John Powell-Jones

“I’ve found the project really positive, I feel that Matt and I immediately struck up a great rapport, and it was a very easy process to share and develop ideas between us. My favourite part of the project has been getting to know Matt and Sharon (the facilitator from ArtGusto in Australia) and seeing how the work developed each week. The process of collaborative storytelling made it really exciting to see what would develop.”

- UK-based John Powell-Jones on his Peer/Peer Collaboration with Australian artist Matt Robertson, ArtGusto

Intersect will highlight UK-based Billy Mann’s Curating Collections project commissioned in collaboration with Monash University Museum of Art (MUMA). Further Art et al. initiatives, including our Curatorial Mentorship, will be reflected through printed material and events. These projects included Australian artist Eden Menta working with European curator and researcher Stella Sideli in a Curatorial Mentorship.

Art et al. will host a panel discussion for visitors prior to the official opening day, on Friday, 2 September with artists and curators who participated in our first year of programming.

“In the context of what we were experiencing in the arts, as well as our current world events, we identified a need for more inclusive and collaborative arts programming that connects and promotes artists. As a result, Art et al. was formed to expand the scope, role and definition of contemporary art. The international platform developed in the UK and Australia, promotes inclusion, access, and equal pay in the arts for neurodivergent, intellectually and learning disabled artists, and connects them with their contemporary arts peers.”
